Subject:Adrian's Birthday Walk 2010

April 23, 2010

Dear Friends and Family,

Once again, we are approaching April 30. Twenty six years ago, this was a joyous day; the day our oldest son Adrian was born. The last 4 years, since his death from sudden cardiac arrest, it has been a most difficult day. These past years have had many challenges and, although the passage of time has made the grief a little less raw, it is still, and always will be, palpable--even more so on special days of remembrance.

For the fourth year, we have again chosen to commemorate his life on his birthday by walking. As he would have been 26 years old this year, we are walking a full marathon. Running a marathon was on Adrian’s to-do list so our walk is particularly meaningful this year.

For anyone who chooses to join us for part of our walk, we will be meeting at the bird sanctuary at 8:30 am and starting our marathon promptly. Our route will be along the waterfront, looping around by the mesa, as in past years.

As always, we are accepting donations to the Williams College fund we established in Adrian’s name: The Adrian Martinez ’06 Fund for Student Life, c/o Enoch Blazis, Williams College, 75 Park St., Williamstown, MA 01267. All donations are greatly appreciated. You can also visit his website at www.adrianmartinez.org and connect to the community of those who knew and loved our Adro.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each year as this date approaches, I have sent out an email to our friends and family to encourage everyone to remember Adrian and his unique approach to life. In response, over the years, I have received some amazing and heart-lifting responses. Many have shown up and walked with us in Santa Barbara, some that live elsewhere have walked or run in their hometowns.

Lots of friends have sent messages that have meant a lot to us and that I have saved. I am taking the liberty of anonymously sharing some of the poignant passages from a few of these messages:

Hello Frankie and Angel,

…I have been thinking about you much of the time, and especially about Adrian. Lately (in the past weeks) I have found myself focusing very often on Adrian. I put his memorial program on my desk, and spend idyll time just looking at the photos and thinking about him. It may sound a bit odd, but he is one of the few people I have known whom I wish I could emulate. Nature seemed to have given him a balance of wisdom, intelligence, generosity, humility, grace and philosophical balance that most people can only dream about achieving. An incomprehensible loss, but I am happy you are celebrating his life.

…Although I am extremely saddened thinking about Adrian not being in this world, more times than not, when I think of Adro, I am forced to smile. He lived such an unfairly short life, but he led his life wiser than the most studied sage. I feel proud and lucky to have him as my friend.

…We think of Adrian and his unwavering honesty and his ability to look at every aspect of life with such an open mind. He is an inspiration.

…I have Adrian's order of service picture right in front of my desk and look at his handsome face every day. It's my time to think of you and Angel and the kids and wonder how you all are even if it's a fleeting moment.

…I love your emails about his life and I too try and live in the moment and will never, ever, forget his service and hearing and really understanding what this wonderful young man was all about.

…Your email brought tears to my eyes for the beauty that was Adrian and the lovely email that commemorated his life. I am so fortunate that I was one of your friends in Santa Barbara who met Adrian. I will never forget that day in the park, taking his picture. He was not comfortable in front of the camera but as we talked the inner glow of his being appeared and it took my breath away. The depth of his soul penetrated me through my lens. I feel so lucky to have met your extraordinary son and to have been touched by his being.

…He was truly a remarkable person whose philosophy and love for life should be emulated by all of us. Just reading your words in your email has inspired me to refocus on what are really the most important things in our lives and relax about the all the crazy things that stress me out.

…we're going to have an "Adro Day", during which we'll do very "Adro" activities all day: pick-up football, foosball, super smash brothers (video game), mario kart (another video game), technical falling competitions, drink unhealthy quantities of orange juice, do every activity with the TV playing in the background, etc.

… It is difficult to find words of comfort. Indeed, there are none; unlike physical pain, there is no narcotic, no analgesic to bring relief, only the terrible aching emptiness and the apparently unbridgeable gulf which separates everything we know and love from everything we don't know.
…We, all of us, have such a short time to impact this temporal world and, if nothing else, Adrian's death should remind us of life's real priorities and how a young person can radiate such goodness and light and exert such a profound influence on those around him in the short time that he was with us.

…We all have our time, but what is important is how we use that time. Adrian managed to cram so much into his too short life. We can never know what he might have achieved but we can cherish what he actually achieved. As a result, he is remembered as we would all wish to be remembered.

… I was lucky enough to meet Adrian right before your trip to the Mediterranean last summer. We had lunch in Boston. I also spoke with him many times on the phone in June and early July. I do know that when you say that he was “special”, caring and compassionate, that you aren’t just saying that because you are grieving parents. I did get a chance to experience Adrian’s special qualities in front of my own eyes. Angel, I have told you this many times before, but what struck me as truly unique about Adrian for someone only 22 years old was his perspective and his love and respect for his parents. Specifically, I asked Adrian what he admired most about his father and what qualities he wanted to emulate of Angel’s in the business world and he answered, “Everything…

…Running is a wonderful outlet and one I still enjoy and participate in. I am sure that your walk this morning allowed both of you to enjoy Adrian’s life with the rhythm of the walk, perhaps remembering the soft cadence of his breath sleeping in your arms. I hope you will remember the comfort that you provided him with the mere holding of him, gently rocking him to sleep. I feel very confident that is a feeling, one of comfort, that Adrian would wish upon you both today.

``````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Thank you all for your amazing continued support and friendship. Our loss has affected us in many ways, one of which is to be acutely aware of and savor the good things in life: Our health and happiness, and the love of friends and family. Thanks for being an important ingredient.
With love,
Frankie, Angel, Lucas, Julian and Olivia
I ran a race on Thanksgiving Day, and talked with my dad about CCXC's strong performance this year at EMass. That made me think back to high school cross-country days, and Adro's leadership our senior year when we won EMass. His quiet encouragement was important the whole season -- not to mention his support for my bet with John Bauer where I would shave my head if we won EMass! I don't run as much as I should now, but I do try to get out when I can, and Adro was a huge part of my love of running. He was a leader and example for me from middle school onward, and I owe him every time I run.
Hi Frankie and Angel,
I'm sure Julian has already told you, but I wanted to let you know that the Adro Classic was a big success. Steve did a great job putting it together and it went really smoothly. Turnout was good across all age groups. Lots of parents, Adro's friends (Bauer, P Hart), a lot of guys my age including 4 Williams alums of various years, plus a big part of the current CCXC team. I was tired from running a 4mi race in Central Park in the morning, but Steve put me in the faster heat. It went out really slow, ~78, but the second lap was much faster in 64. I was able to hold on to get first in 4:38. Peter Vigneron and his Brandeis teammate were right behind in the 4:40's. Tyler Gray, an all-american 800m runner from Williams, was just behind them in fourth. Julian ran well at 5:18, although he told me he ran the same pace in a 5k workout. Very impressive he can make himself work that hard solo. Bauer won the second heat. He looked very smooth a fast the last 400m, which is great because it means he is getting his shin issues under control. The race got him really excited and he says he wants to get back into track racing. After the race we had a big group cooldown and hung out at Adro's bench at the high school. P-Hart got some pizza's and we ended up hanging out by the pool in my backyard. So I think everyone enjoyed themselves and I'm sure Adro would be happy. I definitely want to run again next year.
Hope all is well.
Much love,
Chris
Subject:Thank You
Dear Friends,
Angel, Lucas, Julian, Olivia and I wanted to extend a special thank you to those who walked the entire route with us on Thursday. We were lucky to have a gorgeous Santa Barbara day, perfect conditions for a loooong walk. But honestly we may not have been able to get through the day without your amazing support. We never expected anyone outside of our family to go the whole distance and we are truly touched by your dedication.
A 25 mile walk is daunting in any circumstances; we seriously questioned whether we would be able to finish it but convinced ourselves that we could do it to honor Adrian. Most of you only met Adrian in his last couple years. You probably remember his quiet, pensive nature, his gentle demeanor, his serene smile. I wish you all had more time to get to know him because he was truly a special individual. Our memories are rich with his honesty, sweetness, humility, generosity, pure goodness. We draw strength from these memories and I wish more people had the chance to know him longer.
Aside from the walk being a therapeutic way for us to spend Adrian's birthday, it was also a really enjoyable way of taking time out of our busy lives to appreciate good friends and life's gifts. We are very fortunate to have wonderful, thoughtful and supportive friends that will give of themselves in such a way as you all did on Thursday.
A HUGE thank you to all of you from all of us!!
Love,
Angel, Frankie, Lucas, Julian and Olivia
Hi Frankie and Angel,
Last Saturday we celebrated the 3rd annual "Adro Day" in Cambridge,
a celebration of all things Adrian that we've had around his
birthday for the past 3 years. It was a lot of fun with friends
coming up from New York, Washington DC, and even 1 friend from
England! Attached are 3 (largely identical) pictures from Adro Day.
As we had done the previous 2 years, we spent the day playing sports
outside and then cooked Adrian's vodka penne with sausage, peppers,
and onions dinner and ate together while talking about Adrian. It
was a really nice day, and we're planning to keep this tradition
alive for many years to come. I hope your walk on Thursday, while
I'm sure difficult, was also a nice and reflective activity.
I hope all is well, and keep in touch,
Adam
Dear Friends and Family,
Once again, as we have done for the past two years, we will be honoring our son (and brother) Adrian's birthday on April 30 by walking. As he would have been 25 this year, Angel, Frankie, Lucas, Julian and Olivia will be attempting a 25 mile walk as a tribute to and remembrance of his life. As in the past two years, we would ask that all who knew Adrian or know of him take a moment of your day to reflect on his philosophical approach to life: Enjoy every minute, don't get caught up in the trivial nonsense, make time spent with friends and family the number one priority. We will always miss Adrian. But we keep his spirit alive and constantly with us as we hope many of you do.
For those of you in the Santa Barbara area, if you wish to join us for part of our walk, we would be honored. We plan to start at 8 am at the Bird Sanctuary on Cabrillo Blvd. We will be walking probably until at least 4 or 5 pm. We will all have our cell phones with us so you can contact us at any point to find out where we are in order to jump in for a mile or 2 or however long you wish.
Angel: (805)570-4469
Frankie: (805)450-0961
Lucas: (978)505-9125
Julian: (805)450-1176
Olivia: (805)450-9042
This day is a difficult one for us but the physical challenge of the walk has felt like an appropriate way to pay homage to Adrian. In his 5th grade yearbook, Adrian was quoted as saying "one day I will run a marathon". Since he didn't get the chance to do that in his short lifetime, we plan to walk 25 miles this birthday and 26 next. After that we will probably have to come up with a new way to honor his life on April 30 but he would be proud that his marathon goal was being realized.
We appreciate the continued donations being made to Adrian's scholarship fund at both his high school and Williams college. For anyone that's interested, please visit :
or contact:
Adrian Martinez '06 Memorial Fund c/o Diana Elvin, Director of Donor Relations 75 Park St. Williamstown, Ma 02167
Again, thank you for all your friendship, support and love. We are blessed to have you in our lives.
With much love,
Frankie, Angel, Lucas, Julian and Olivia
Angel, Frankie:
I wanted to send you a quick note as I was thinking about a lot the other day. As you know, Adrian and I went to Nike Tennis Camp for many summers with one another. In an effort to relieve a bit of stress I took to the tennis court last week. I never play tennis as much as I used to, but I soon realized why I need to play much more. During a water break I started to think about how tennis became such an influential part of my life and also where it all began. I remember getting picked up every Tuesday by either Mrs. Warren, my Mom, Mrs. Martinez, or Mrs. Chase to head to Bedford to play tennis with Adro, Peter, Paul, and myself. There were a lot of happy and fun memories which immediately came to my mind. I ended up leaving the court in an extremely happy demeanor. The nostalgic memories of those Tuesdays and camp make me really appreciate the time I spent with Adrian and our friends. Tennis has been a huge part of my life and those great memories will live with me forever. I hope all is well with you both and the family and please know that my family and I think of your family and Adrian often.
Warm regards,
Adam Raffa
Angel already posted some of the publicity the Ultimate challenge, and a group of raucous friends,garnered last weekend in Concord.
We had a great reunion full of laughter, highlights, food (thank you again to all of the families that chipped in to provide food for our ravenous rag-tag crew of competitors, girlfriends, referees), shouting both in joy and argument-often both, and a great togetherness moment at Sleepy Hollow cemetery hanging out on Adro's bench and taking in the moment in unity.
Now we return to our routines with brightened memories, perspective and happiness, grown from our experiences, friendships, and deep connection with Adrian.
We all miss you buddy and you're in our thoughts and actions daily.
Ultimate homecoming: Graduates make annual visit for friendly competition
By Patrick Ball/Staff Writer
Thu Sep 04, 2008, 11:29 AM EDT
Concord -
Nothing brings a group of guys together better than a weekend of outlandishly intense competition among friends.
Six years removed from their graduation from Concord-Carlisle High School, a group of graduates from the Class or 2002 got together last weekend for a three-day marathon of recreation that pit four teams of four against each other in 10 sporting events.
It was, in their words, the Ultimate Challenge, a Labor Day tradition that began in 2003 and was cemented in 2004 as something they would do forever.
Steve Barry, Bryan Chang, Charle Chivvas, Nate Franklin, Matt Gardner, Sam Gould, Ryan Hill, Jack Kavanagh, Nick Korn, Gordon Kraft-Todd, Brendan McGuirk, Chris Sentence, Evan Rossman, Alex Tamargo, Peter Warren and Chris Worthy meet up each Labor Day and engage in an Ultimate Challenge comprised of the games they used to play on weekends.
“We take it way too far,” said Charle Chivvas, a Concord native now living in London who returned home last week to reunite with his high school friends for a weekend of sports and spirits.
Only among friends can sideline interactions seamlessly switch between asking about a friend’s family to good-natured griping that the opposition’s strategy of weakly toeing the kickball to a soft spot behind the pitcher’s mound cheapens the game and “promotes mediocrity.”
And only among friends would a group of 20-somethings participate in group stretching and sun-screening, while reminiscing about old injuries acting up and waxing sarcastic on whether the excessive application of sunscreen could prove carcinogenic.
“It developed early on into something that was important to us,” said Warren, who flew back from California, where he does sports marketing. “The best part for me, especially being across the country, is the e-mails.”
The details for each Challenge are worked out through literally thousands of e-mails passing between friends during the intervening months. Team captains and an executive committee charged with making rules and securing available fields is voted on electronically, and game and meal schedules are set in cyberspace.
“It’s good,” Sentence said of the e-mail exchange that offers a welcome respite during the workweek. “With people living away and work and stuff, it’s hard to keep in touch.”
The importance of the Ultimate Challenge, Gould said, is that it brings together old friends, allowing them to catch up and remember a friend they lost a few years ago, Adrian Martinez, who died of a heart attack in August 2006, just days day before the Ultimate Challenge was to be held. The group plans to hold one of the next Ultimate Challenges in Santa Barbara, where Martinez’s parents now reside.
“Having 16 friends you can come back and see from a high school this small, I think, is pretty incredible,” said Gould, who came up from Washington, D.C.
Aside from Chivvas, Gould, Warren and Chang, who lives in New York, most of the Ultimate Challengers live in the Boston area. In previous years, students studying abroad have returned from as far away as Australia.
“They all travel back for it every year, which is pretty impressive,” said Tamargo, who lives in Boston and sees “most of these guys” on a regular basis. “I would like to think that we would all do it, because it’s so important.”
It was the second-straight year Chivvas flew in from London, where he works with an investment firm. This time, he brought with him his girlfriend, Dee Howley, and his flatmate, Lisa Cockhill.
“I think it’s brilliant. There is a tradition in it,” Howley, who is British, said of the Ultimate Challenge as she and Cockhill sat by the first tee at Kimball’s Friday night.
They have been documenting the Ultimate Challenge since it began, with production becoming more and more serious each year. This year, Chang, a video editor for The Onion in New York, decided to include a more in-depth — but not at all serious — storyline to the glorified highlight reel of years past.
“I have been excited to see if we can put together a more story-driven documentation,” Chang said, seconds before taking his first golf swing ever. “It’s cool that these guys come back from all over the place. It’s nice to have an annual tradition.”
We received this note from Nick Korn. It reflects the ongoing impact that Adrian has on the lives of his friends. It is our hope that get-togethers like this become a lasting legacy to FRIENDSHIP. Adrian could not be honored more appropriately, since he was the best friend anyone could have.
Frankie,
I just wanted to send you a quick note to fill you in on how the Boston/Concord contingent spent Adrian's birthday; I am coming out to California this week, and can hopefully see you all and relate it to you in person, but wanted to make sure I got the photos to you beforehand. I had all the boys over for dinner (homemade chili, guacamole, etc.), and it was really nice to all spend some time together and hang out--even though a bunch of us are around here, its rare that we all come together at one time. After stuffing ourselves, we headed out the Emerson and the Track to quietly walk around and talk and remember, and before long were all laughing and telling stories. We tried taking photos, and after a group photo and a number of failed attempts to capture ourselves running, ended up with the attached image. I think we spent the night in just the right way to honor Adro's memory: the boys all together, eating well, laughing and enjoying each other's company.
Hoping to see you soon,
Nick
Dear Friends,
As you all know, our beloved Adrian passed on August 10, 2006. On Wed.
April 30, Angel, Frankie, Julian and Olivia will be celebrating
Adrian's 24th birthday by attempting to walk 24 miles in his honor.
As last year, we would ask that all who knew Adrian or know of him
take a moment of your day to reflect on his philosophical approach to
life: Enjoy every minute, don't get caught up in the trivial nonsense,
make time spent with friends and family the number one priority. As
much as we miss him, we keep his spirit alive and constantly with us,
trying to emulate his enlightened philosophy. Knowing that our friends
and family are doing the same gives us great comfort.
For those of you in the Santa Barbara area, if you wish to join us for
part of our walk, we would be honored. We plan to start at 8:00 am at
the bird sanctuary on Cabrillo. We will be walking probably until at
least 3 pm. We will all have our cell phones with us so you can
contact us at any point to find out where we are in order to jump in
for a mile or 2 or however long you wish.
Angel: (805)570-4469
Frankie: (805)450-0961
Julian: (805)450-1176
Olivia:(805)450-9042
We appreciate our friends and family who continue to remember Adrian.
We are grateful that we continue to receive donations to the
scholarship funds set up in his name at his high school and college.
But the most important thing for us is the acknowledgment that Adrian's
life touched you in some very positive way and that his 22 years on
this earth made a lasting impact on many lives. We know some of you,
particularly our Santa Barbara friends, did not get a chance to meet
Adrian but we so appreciate the friendship and support you have given
our family.
Remember Adrian's life. If some of his traits and philosophies rub off
on any of us, the world is a better place:
Dedication to your goals, your friends and family, your commitments
Honesty and trust, pure and simple
Love of learning, challenging yourself, intellectual curiosity
Being non-judgmental, and accepting people as they are
Honoring your body by physical exercise, good eating habits
Most important, BE HAPPY.
Our love to all,
Frankie and Angel
this experience reminded me of the funny story John told from his driving voyage to Vegas from Santa Barbara with Adro summer of '05. The story about running low on gas, purchasing just enough to get to the city, drafting behind trucks and such adventures.
the preface is that Nate come to visit CA and we went to LV (his first time, my first non-business trip) and see Sam, Alexa and friends of all three from Conn coll or from living in DC or both.
i saw sunlight-unlike all the business trips there- and also didn't end up gambling much. We left at 11 pm and I drove Nate who alternately napped or conversed deliriously despite having slept in two days straight, oh the glory)
so we stayed up very late both nights, slept 4-5 hours, and were only there for 30hrs total. It was whirlwind, but satisfying and entertaining nonetheless. we went to Zumanity, the "sensual side of Cirque de Solei" which was sweet, impressive, and funny, and yes, sexy. Also had an impromtu dancing session and gymnastics floor routine that evolved into wheelbarrel races for 15 minutes on the casino floor of the Luxor before being scolded and broken up. The passersby and strangers that joined in were good sports at our 6 am session. it was all we could do when we found a music-spewing speaker when most everything else started to shut down.
A good time was had by all despite the driving.
I went to visit adro once a week or two before one of these mustache parties and got to see some of the humorous attempts by his friends to grow facial hair. I think the official rules of the party were "no dudes without staches and ladies with 'em".
I am getting pumped for the challenge '08 as the planning gets underway. Looking to take home the 'Tinez Cup a second year running but I know defense is going to be tough this year. I understand some pretty intense training regiments have already been started by some hungry competitors.
I hope the relatives, friends, schoolmates et. al. mainly from the MA area have some great plans for the Super Bowl tomorrow! I've got a psuedo playoff beard going as an ode to the O-linemen, and it is reminding me of road-trip scruffiness, mustache parties-of which adro convinced a few of us to hold at our respective colleges- and the wacky team camaraderie hair styles of the ult challenge. (a coworker actually complimented me on the "fullness" of my hair coverage, but don't worry alex and nick, your mantle of hairiness isn't being broached... Julian, Angel and I will have some company tomorrow as we hopefully watch another Pat's blowout. Enjoy fully everyone!
On another note; I am going on a River rafting trip for work this May. the info is here: www.Oars.com/teva/ I'm on the 3rd one listed ** May 18th – 23rd ** let me know if there is interest to join me there! One of my best friends from work will also be on the trip, and I'm sure the guides and other trip participants will be entertaining too.
Labor Day weekend in Concord we will be having our 2007 Ultimate Challenge. We will be enjoying each other's company, remembering and celebrating past memories and competing. If you'd like to stop by to watch, hang out and chat or whatever please email me and I'll find out what our schedule and locations plan.
Bless you all and I think I speak for a lot of us by saying that it's so special to have so many great people all connected through the web Adro held, and that together we are able to get through and see joy during tough days and anniversaries.
